10 Albums Worth Checking Out, 7.26.24
Jonnine - Southside Girl
HTRK frontwoman does away with house altogether for an album of ghostly gossamer ambient folk. Spellbinding and tranquil, personal without saying a single word. Absolutely not to be missed, like everything HTRK does.
Kamixlo - DEATHWORK
Grimy, ripped-apart club beats for the Sixth World featuring vocals from the likes of Isabella Lovestory and Bladee. Like a reincarnated M.I.A.
KMRU - Natur
More top shelf, high-octane ambient from (where KMRU's from) wunderkind KMRU, *Natur* sounds surprisingly noisy and forceful compared to KMRU's usual graceful field recordings.
Nathan Bowles Trio - Are Possible
An album of cosmic twanging Americana, with longform acoustic jams somewhere between Neil Young and Pelt before opening the gateway with some folksy spiritual jazz. Lush and romantic, meditative and mesmerizing.
Raphael Rogiński - Zaltys
Mesmerizing, fascinating album of ambient guitar portraits from Polish guitarist Raphael Roginski, evoking his Eastern European homeland. Found at Boomkat.
Crypto Order - Skin Bank
8 tracks of virulent, acid-soaked techno. Discovered via the ever-reliable Forced Exposure.
TwinSisterMoon & NSB Archive - The Hollow Mountain
Essential reissue from arch mesmerist TwinSisterMoon, the solo project from 1/2 of Natural Snow Buildings. This album goes even harder than when it came out in 2009, as The Hollow Mountain is some of Mehdi Ameziane most trance-inducing and spellbinding work. Absolutely, under no conditions operate heavy machinery while listening to this record. It might be a good idea to lay down a circle of salt while you're at it.
Wormwitch - Wormwitch
Blackened death 'n roll, baby! Wormwitch's self-titled rolls through the airwaves like a siege cannon. Brutal and relentless, yet still melodic enough to be fun. Horns up!
Xterea - Guardian of Zeus
Abstract beats and rough noise with the occasional alien vocal. Anti-gravity drum 'n bass meets scuffed techno. Gorgeously addictive!
Yurika & Sababa 5 - Kokoro
Gorgeous slab of funky, breezy Middle Eastern psych/funk. Just got a delicious blue vinyl pressing, also available via Forced Exposure. Recommended for fans of Selda, Khruangbin, and Claude Fontaine.
