Welcome to another Bandcamp Friday! One of those rare days of the year where your money can actually be used to subvert capitalism. As usual, there's an embarrassment of incredible albums either coming out today or recently released that are beyond deserving of your time, attention, and luchre.
From the artful spin on bass music of Damos Room to the ghostly psych folk of Avi C. Engel to the sublime beats of Portland's Production Unit Xero, here are 10 albums to check out this Bandcamp Friday!
10 Albums to Check Out This Bandcamp Friday
Damos Room - Commencement // Mineral Blend
Commencement // Mineral Blend was sourced from last month's Best Electronic Music of April 2024 by Joe Muggs. He calls the 12" "Thick clouds of sonic smoke; eerie, subconscious beat poetry; pulsing sub bass and face-slap snares." Couldn't say it better myself.
Avi C. Engel - Bestiary
Hauntological geniuses Woodford Halse's sister label, Fenny Compton, delivers a spectral lathe-cut 7" for their fourth release. Bestiary is a gorgeous, haunting sliver of psych folk, somewhere between Sandy Denny and Beth Gibbons. The lathe-cut single only has a run of 45, so please try save me one!
Ibibio Sound Machine - Pull the Rope
Ibibio Sound Machine trade in the sun-dappled swagger they're known for sweat-soaked disco fare. Pull the Rope is one on today's hottest releases, so it's beyond exciting it's available on Bandcamp for Bandcamp Friday!
Howie Lee - At The Drolma Wesel-Ling Monastery
Here's another one culled from Joe Muggs' bandcamp roundup. At the Drolma Wesel-Ling Monastery is a beguiling mix of throat singing and ecstatic machine beats recorded in Tibet. One of a kind!
Obey Cobra - Mwg Drwg
Rocket Recordings return with another blast of deep-friend psych - with a twist! Obey Cobra arcweld the primal pounding post-industrial menace of bands like Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs with a poppier sensibility. Equal parts appealing and repulsive, Mwg Drwg is like a prophetic ring of soap scum you can't pry yr eyes off of.
Derek Piotr - Divine Supplication (Pre-Order)
Just one week until the new one from Derek Piotr drops. He dedicates Divine Supplication to "joy and play," rediscovering the healing power of music and collaboration in the wake of some personal hardships. Playful it is, and inspiring as much as it is inspired. It may be Piotr's best work to date.
You can read my review of Divine Supplication's two lead singles, "East Tennessee" and "Perfect Matrimony" at MicroGenreMusic.
Phelimuncasi & Metal Preyers - Izigqinamba
Arch futurists Phelimuncasi & Metal Preyers return to Uganda's Nyege Nyega Tapes with a brand new collection of gqom bangers. Stripped down and raw as you like, Izigqinamba is a revelation of detuned tribal chants and atmospheric beats. "Marshy productions like cryptic transmissions from the far future" indeed!
Production Unit Xero - Mr. X
Still feeling the newest from Heterodox Records label-head Production Unit Xero, It's a footwork masterwork, a sublimation of trance-inducing beats and euphoric vocals. PUX worked for several years on Mr. X, and it absolutely shows.
Ureterocele - Left Renal Agenesis
Been listening to Left Renal Agenesis since discovering Ureterocele a few weeks ago on BlueSky. It's an absolute riot of harsh notes and industrial beats, ripped apart and tossed like confetti into Merzbow's wind tunnel.
We Are Parasols - At the Edge of the End (No Center Line Special Edition)
Portland shoegazers We Are Parasols have been gearing up for their next release with a series of remastered recordings. At the Edge of the End (No Center Line Special Edition) delivers a lush, cinematic HD mix to show off their expanded mixing abilities and enhanced confidence. It also finds the trio working in more ambient forms, pairing We Are Parasol's drifting dream pop with dark ambient textures and industrial beats. It sounds utterly fantastic and is not to be missed.
