5 New Albums Out Today, 4.26.24 Edition
From St. Vincent’s lush, personal 7th LP, All Born Screaming, to a subtle neoclassical electroacoustic score from Thom Yorke, here are 5 albums coming out today that are worth your time & attention.
Hauntology Now! is the Substack of interdisciplinary artist, designer, musician, academic writer, and cultural critic J. Simpson, where he writes about all things hauntological, atemporal, philosophical, as well as sharing thoughts, reflections, and musings on music, movies, books, and life.
Happy New Release Friday everybody! I’m traveling today, as i’m covering the Austin Psych Fest, the original institution behind the also excellent Levitation Festival, for my beloved Spectrum Culture. My flight left Portland at midnight and my sleep schedule’s been super erratic recently. By the time i reached my home for the next five days, the Red Roof Inn Plus+ in South Austin, i’d been awake for nearly 36 hours. Needless to say, i went into a coma after watching Furious 7, so i’ve been up and at it since 3 am. Luckily, there’s no shortage of incredible music coming out today. I’ve already listened to a ton, so i’ve got plenty to share. Here are 5 albums released today, April 26, 2024, that i think you’ll like.
St. Vincent - All Born Screaming
Annie Clark’s self-produced 7th LP feels like her most personal in a long time, if ever. There’s still traces of the nervous, jittery dystopian synth funk and new wave-laced guitar-centric indie rock you’d want from a St. Vincent record. There’s also darkness aplenty, as a decent chunk sounds like a Nine Inch Nails record. There’s also hope, passion, love, genuine human connection… it’s incredible, and only gets better with each listen.
Thom Yorke - Confidenza OST
Thom Yorkers score for Daniele Luchetti’s Confidenze is a brooding, haunting gorgeous tapestry of ethereal strings, mangled electroacoustic textures, international jazz and pop songwriting. It’s evocative and delicious, like Beirut and Radiohead pairing with Lustmord to score Dante’s Inferno.
Bladee - Cold Visions
Grime and black metal aren’t necessarily the most obvious bedfellows, but Bladee makes it make sense, pairing crisp, intricate beats and smooth vocals with stories of alienation, depression and lots and lots of Vincent Price’s laughter.
Six Organs of Admittance - Time Is Glass
Ben Chasny’s 21st album as Six Organs of Admittance finds the psych folk wizard return to his roots, in many different ways. He’s recently moved back to his longtime home of Northern California, resumed recording and producing his own material and writing songs for friends.
You can learn more about Time Is Glass in my interview with him for PopMatters.
Keepsakes - Rant 4 Cash EP
Keepsakes delivers his first full full-length EP for Perc Tras with an excoriating takedown of today’s electronic music scene over a skein of heavy industrial beats and steely post-industrial atmospherics. The A-Side even includes a Perc remix!
I’ve got to run, find some chilaquiles and mind-melting psych rock. Stay tuned for my review of Austin Psych Fest next week. In the meanwhile, what’re y’all listening to, reading, watching, or obsessing over this week?
I’ve also added most of these to my April 2024 Spotify playlist for easy listening!
